RE: Pics of Prophetstown State Park in Indiana

Mike,
Thanks for the pics. I noticed that you stayed in the electric only section. How were the full hookup sites? Any more privacy between sites over there? Thanks

RE: bunk end fan/light combos

Could it possibly be the power socket itself rather than the lights?
Mine does the same thing also.

RE: Awning

If I'm understanding you correctly, you don't mean the roller but the fabric itself when the awning is open, right?
Ours does the same thing, it's not too bad but I would feel better about it if the fabric was more taut. As long as we have one end of the roller set higher than the other and the roller itself lower than the top where the fabric attaches to the camper we haven't had any issues. Still, I would take it in in brisk winds or really heavy rains.
Hope this helps.

RE: Electric Brakes

This recently happened to us. The connector (socket) at the bumper was corroded. Cheap part and fairly easy to replace if you're comfortable with some basic wiring.

RE: Worried about neighbors camp fire burning tent beds

Hello everyone,
Have a question for you all. We have a brand new Jayco 19H and am new to camping.
If a neighbors camp fire is to close will the ashes burn a hole in the tent beds and/or screens.
We used to have a very old pup and it did that. Was wondering with a new camper how they were.
Any experience?
Happy camping,
Sherrie
that's one of the reasons to get popup gizmos or solar blankets for the bunk ends. they are much cheaper to replace.
the bunk ends are covered in vinyl and will resist embers much better than regular canvas. your old pup was probably just canvas.
i haven't seen many campsites that would place the firepit close to where the RV is parked.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but popup gizmos only cover the top of the tent ends; not the sides, right? So the gizmos will only offer you limited protection.

RE: how many would buy a HTT with or without slide?

We're in our third season with our 23b and still comment on how happy we are that we bought a unit with a slide. Makes such a huge difference in our opinion.

RE: Blast vs. Ducted A/C

We have the Roo 23b. The A/C is ducted, but you have the option of using the center blast if you want.
99% of the time we use the ducted rather than the center blast. It seems to direct the air where we want it, (especially when we sleep) rather than in just one place. We usually run a fan in the bunk end to help direct the cool air into the bunk. With the thermostat control, we never get too cold or too hot.
We don't have the popup gizmos but may get them in the future. Usually, we like sites among the trees so direct sunlight (and the resulting increase in temperature in the bunks) is not a huge issue for us.

RE: Surge Protectors

Is this really a big issue out there? Most people don't have a surge protector for their entire house; only valuable electronics- which you won't find in my camper anyway. About the only reason I can think to have one is to protect the A/C.
Can somebody share experiences of damage they sustained while camping because they didn't have a surge protector?
Thanks

RE: RV Direct Experiences

but I think this is pretty much what you get when you deal with a discount broker.
I dealt with a large, nationally advertised dealership who is definitely NOT a discount broker, and the service I've received after the sale was TERRIBLE. My experience causes me to respectfully disagree with you. :D
I agree 100% that the seller should keep the buyer informed if "promised" delivery dates cannot be met, but I also think estimated delivery dates are about as accurate as weather forecasting.
Phemens, sorry for the frustration. Eventually you'll get your camper and all will be good.

RE: Portable Waste Tanks

We have a 16 gallon 4-wheeler that I only put gray water in. It can sometimes be a messy job, and since it weighs nearly 130lbs I don't want to take the chance that it rolls over on me and spills black water all over the road (I use my TV to bring it to the dump station.)
My Wife and I have camped as many as 9 days in a row and haven't come close to filling the black tank. We also take showers in the public showers because I don't feel like emptying my gray water tank ever day while I'm on vacation. Besides, it gives me an excuse to walk somewhere! Without taking showers in the camper we can usually go about 4 or 5 days before the gray water is filled.
I agree with some others, not requiring a sewer hookup gives you so many more choices, particularly beautiful state parks.

RE: Fire !! Fire !!

I don't disagree; teaching a 12 or 13 year old is probably OK. But I think that teaching a child about fire safety MUST be done properly. If a kid gets a math question wrong, what's the penalty? They don't get an "A" on their test. If a kid chooses to use a fire extinguisher for 15 seconds instead of using those 15 seconds to escape, it could mean their LIVES. This is reality. As one F.F. stated earlier, most fire injuries and fatalities are due to non-operating smoke detectors and those who try to put out the fire themselves or go back in.
I think it is naive to think that some children (again, your right, it depends on their age & maturity level) will know the difference of when it is OK to extinguish the fire and when they should just escape. I also think it is naive to think that any person, even an adult, will have the ability to operate a fire extinguisher in the circumstance that they are unable to escape due to fire. This is something you see in movies and T.V. shows, not reality. If the fire is such that it prevents you from escaping, you will NOT be able to use an extinguisher to save your life. I don't mean to be disrespectful to anyone here, honest. It's just reality.
There is always that chance if you choose to teach a child how to use a fire extinguisher they will make the wrong choice. Since the fire extinguisher will not save their life anyway, then why take the chance and show them how to use it? Keep the extinguisher out of the equation and the only thing they will try to do is escape.
Bottom line, fire extingishers are meant to save property, not lives.
Good discussion. No offense to you guys, I'm just passionate about keeping our kids safe and I'm afraid that there are a lot of misconceptions about fire safety. Thanks.

RE: Fire !! Fire !!

Well I agree with all that was said, except the fire extuigisher. The kids should be taught to get out, not fight. We want them to only care about getting out of the trailer. To be honest if it "catches" you might as well throw the ext out the window, cause its really not going to do much.
1. Practice Exits
2. Define a meeting place
3. Practice Exits again.
4. Have good insurance.
When we teach fire safety at the firehouse, using the ext is a last resort. Especially kids. Most often they are not going to know when enough is enough and get the hell out. Most adults do not. When people die in a fire its because of 2 reasons(Most often)
1. No working smoke detectors or no smoke detectors at all.
2. Instead of getting out, they either try to stay and fight or go back in once out.
I am not trying to be a know it all by any means, I think the best practice is just get out and stay out.
mark
As a Firefighter myself, I agree 100%. Teaching children how to use fire extinguishers is not appropriate. It will only encourage them to use them when they shouldn't. Studies show that children often don't react appropriately to a smoke detector in the middle of the night (in spite of the training they've received) let alone expecting them to fight a fire. If they can't get out, there is no way that knowing how to use a fire extinguisher is going to save their lives. Sorry.
Great topic; hopefully it has made us all a little safer! :)

RE: Another Concertone Rant

How much cabin lighting is on when using the unit? We notice increased interference when we have several lights (or just the dining table light) on as this causes the inverter cooling fan to run. The inverter cooling fan running seems to cause interference.
Go to a Radio Shack or someplace similar and you might be able to find noise filters that you may be able to install in the back of the unit.
Good luck.

Do you have a model number for your Concertone unit? Not all Roos come with the same unit. Mine plays DVD's, CD's, etc. and has video in / out, etc.

RE: Repacking wheel bearing every year

How much is everyone else paying? I checked our dealer and they want 99 an axel = $200. I am certainly mechanically challenged - was going to talk my FIL into coming over and helping me. I'll be damned if I spend $200 that's for sure.
Just had mine done (2 axels) for $79.90 at Camping World.

RE: Brakes and Bearings

I have a Roo 23b. After two years of use, I decided to get the bearings repacked. I wasn't having any problems, but reading several posts here convinced me that it would be a smart thing to do; you know the saying about an ounce of prevention?
I took it to Camping World. They repacked all four wheels and adjusted the brakes for $79.90. For me, it was worth the price. Even if I knew what I was doing, it seems a reasonable price to pay to avoid the hassle of doing it myself.
